Facing the urgent requirement to end illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, Can Tho city is strengthening its communication work in a structured, synchronized and in-depth manner. The focus is on linking legal communication with fishing fleet management, seafood traceability and livelihood transition for fishermen, thereby contributing together with the whole country to the early removal of the European Commission’s (EC) “yellow card”.

In Quang Tri Province, Flotilla 202 under the Command of Coast Guard Region 2 has coordinated with Trieu Van Border Guard Station of the Quang Tri Provincial Border Guard Command and the People’s Committee of Nam Cua Viet Commune to organize an awareness-raising session for local fishermen on regulations governing fishing activities and measures to prevent illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

Vietnamese Ambassador Le Thi Tuyet Mai, head of the Permanent Mission to the United Nations (UN), World Trade Organisation (WTO), and other international organisations in Geneva, led a delegation participating in WTO negotiations on fisheries subsidies, which was recently held in an online format.

The US Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) and the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD)’s Directorate of Fisheries (DFISH) concluded a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen Vietnam’s fisheries management and law enforcement capabilities.

The EC’s inspection team will return to Vietnam to check on progress in the next six months. The country must submit a comprehensive report on the results of the recommendation implementation by May 15 next year.
